People and Other Animals
by Norma A. Donner
Every day more of us are realizing that
humans cannot survive without the rest
of the Animal Kingdom. While many species
have been vanishing, it is Homo sapien
who is in the greatest danger of eradication.
At
one point in the past, the skies of America
were often darkened by flocks of carrier
pigeons. By 1914, the carrier pigeon had
become extinct. Nearly the same fate befell
the whooping crane, the whale, and the
bison. As scientists observed the danger
they were able to change the course of
destiny and Bison are again roaming the
range; Whooping Crane numbers are climbing
too, though they remain an endangered
species. And the much hunted whale is
under international protection.
Norma Donner has made a lifetime study
of animal (including human) behavior,
encompassing those domestic animals on
which we depend so much. These include
cats and cows, dogs and dromedaries and
same wild ones, like cougars and coyotes,
deer and dolphins. This book offers an
appreciation of the interdependence of
all animal groups. She is convinced that
the similarities far exceed the differences.
